Leicester Racecourse

Leicester racecourse is situated in Oadby, Leicestershire. It is one of the smaller courses in Britain, but has plenty to be proud of, with a history dating back over 100 years, 200 acre grounds and 30 race meetings in its annual calendar. The course also boasts some of the most up to date facilities of any racecourse in the country and is an ideal location for conferences and private events.

History

Established in 1882, after transferring from Victoria Park, Leicester Racecourse has paid host to many famous horses in its history including Zilzal, Time Charter and Silver Buck, a jumping legend. Grand National

winners Corbiere and Seagram have also made appearances on the course.

The course is best known for the Leicestershire Stakes, a flat horse race run over a distance of 1,416 metres in late April. Between 1999 and 2003, when it was classed as a Group 3 race, it was won three times by the horse Warningford.

January 2008 sees the introduction of The Jelson Homes Quality House Builders Since 1889 Chase, hoped to become one of the best steeplechases in the national racing calendar.

New investments have recently added to the high standard of the racecourse. Improvements have included a new glass fronted grandstand and the Nelson Restaurant with its panoramic views. 2006 also saw the launch of the Club Room, a private facility for groups to hire, offering an unbeatable experience at the races.

Course Information

Flat races of under a mile are run on the straight course. Longer races are run right handed on the oval course of 1 mile 5 furlongs.

The jump course is a true test of stamina. The course is 1 mile 6 furlongs with ten fences, including two open ditch and one water jump. It is a right handed, undulating course, and with the last three furlongs uphill, horses are tested to the limit.
